Southdale Center in Edina, Minnesota opened on October 8, 1956 and was the first fully enclosed shopping mall in the nation. Donald Dayton, president of Dayton's Department store, wanted to expand into the suburbs, envisioning an all-in-one shopping experience - The Mall.

Dayton's Holiday Shows began in 1963 as a way to draw people back to the downtown store. In celebration of the American institution known as The Mall and the family that helped create so many memories, the library will show PBS's Remember the Magic: A Look Back at the Dayton's Holiday Shows. Discussion to follow the film showing.

Film Description: Every holiday season, Dayton’s transformed into a magical wonderland, complete with storybooks brought to life by artistry and fantastical displays. Wander back in time to the 8th floor auditorium, where countless visitors made cherished memories, and reminisce with artists, magic makers and lifelong fans who share their stories of this timeless 
tradition.
