Cooking with Books: Fry Bread To Go

Read the book Fry Bread by Kevin Noble Maillard and then try making some at home! The author of this book is a member of the Seminole Nation, Mekusukey band. Fry bread became a part of many Native Americans’ diets after the people were forced from their land and given limited rations by the government in the mid-1800s. Making it now is a reminder and celebration of the survival and resilience of what their ancestors went through. Just like the diversity of appearance across the characters in the book, fry bread is as varied as the people who make it and the places where it is made. You can watch one of our librarians read the picture book here: https://youtu.be/AZz2NLA4tvg
